ABOUT US Background North Berwick in Bloom began in the early 1990s, when traders complained that business was at a low ebb and wanted some floral hanging baskets to brighten things up. Initial hurdles included planning issues: being in a conservation area could mean that planning permission was required for every single hanging basket! This was resolved and 'Bloom' was started. In the early days it was a 'learning curve' as the new group learned how to 'garden a town!' In the beginning, community involvement was low, but is now the town's strength. We work closely with community groups, and teams are formed to plant up, pick litter, and keep the beds weeded and looking good. Achievements North Berwick has achieved recognition in Beautiful Scotland in Bloom over the years, culminating in being judged overall winner in 2007, winning the coveted Rosebowl as well as the Coastal Category. In Great Britain in Bloom, we were awarded a Silver Gilt in the Coastal Category and also received an Environmental Quality award. We are finalists in Britain in Bloom 2008 so are working hard to do even better this year. The primary objective is to make the town nicer and prettier. If we get medals, that's a bonus - a catalyst to drive us on. But it's a long term, year round commitment.
